From waste to wear, we are helping to give new life to pollution. During the very first steps in production, we seek responsible solutions and bold choices that lower the impact on the environment and respond to the alarming problem of waste. We collaborate to make an accountable change; we work with our international partners, Aquafil®, Healthy Seas, and various European Ghost Diving groups, to tackle the ghost fishing phenomenon responsible for the needless deaths of marine animals. Our mission is to clean up the ocean one net at a time and remove this waste from our oceans.
The lifecycle of our brand includes the AOIFE® team in Ireland, 950 fishers and fish farmers. Aquafil ®, Healthy Seas in Italy, ghost diving groups throughout Europe, 381 children engaged in education programmed, 75,000kg fishing nets are collected in sometimes very dangerous sea conditions with over two hundred volunteers. 585 tons of fishing nets have been ordered to date; this is the equivalent amount in weight to 5 blue whales, the giant mammals on Earth. According to UNEP and FAO reports, some 640,000 tons of fishing gear are left or abandoned in the seas and oceans every year. This is a global problem that requires urgent action.
AOIFE® is offering a self-sustaining and scalable solution to the waste problem; we are expanding with our partners and helping purify water by recycling. Innovation and design solutions can inspire individuals to lead more sustainable lifestyles, reducing impacts and improving well-being. We support a circular economy and the UN's sustainable development goals (SDG).
The Circular Process
We are part of a new generation of businesses championing the circular economy. Through circular innovative design practices and collaboration, we aim to reduce waste and improve our carbon footprint while creating beautiful products you can cherish for many years to come.
The raw resources used to make our products are made by rescuing waste, like fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and industrial plastic from landfills and oceans all over the world. This all takes time to find the end of life for these resources and organising logistics to help retrieve them. An Italian premium nylon called ECONYL ® is then crafted from these resources using a regeneration system.
Through a radical regeneration and purification process, this nylon waste is recycled right back to its original purity it is precisely the same as virgin nylon.
This nylon is then processed into textile yarn which we send to our artisan mill in Milan, Italy, who turn the yarns into our signature unique fabrics.
Our products are then beautifully handcrafted in an atelier in Italy. We use only 100% regenerated nylon resources and has the potential to be recycled infinitely, never losing its quality.
We offer a repairs service for bags that develop a defect such as a faulty zip, or have been subject to wear and tear over time. a o i f e ® bags are made by the best certified Italian artisans rich in the hertiage of bag craftsmanship. A great deal of care and attention is given to each bag and defects are rare.
You can return your bag at their end-of-life and the material will be recycled , regenerated and redesigned into new products. We are closing the loop.
